Restoring Life to Gaza: Providing Safe Drinking Water for Families in Need

Gaza has long suffered from a double water crisis, represented by: the lack of safe drinking water and the lack of sanitation services. In addition, more than 108,000 cubic meters of untreated wastewater flows daily from Gaza into the Mediterranean Sea, which poses severe public health risks in Gaza. The population of Gaza is two million people – half of them are children. Gaza gets only 5% of the water supply from Israel. The main source of water for Gaza is the coastal aquifer, but the over-extraction of groundwater leads to rapid depletion of the water as people have no other choice.

Worse still, only 4% of groundwater is suitable for drinking due to pollution and seawater intrusion, and the rest must be purified and desalinated to make it drinkable. As for the cost of water, it is exceptionally high, reaching (about 7 $) per cubic meter, and in order to alleviate their suffering, the International Relief Organization IRO bought a significant amount of potable water and distributed it to poor families.

Sustainable solar projects

The electricity crisis in Gaza is an ongoing and continuous crisis of more than 11 years of blockade. Almost two million citizens in the Gaza Strip coincide with the current crisis, with the failure of international and humanitarian institutions calling for assistance to limit its effects on human life and the environment in the Gaza Strip.

With regular power supply at a rate of approximately 4 hours per day, families rely on candles as a source of light, because the hours of electricity are insufficient, even charging batteries for lighting lights also causes the problem of water cuts because they depend on an electric motor and even children have suffered throughout their school years on candles. Damaged their eyesight, and many died from burns from candles or generator blasts.

As an alternative to alleviating the crisis, The international  Relief Organization worked on the completion of the solar energy project, which is one of the most important types of renewable energy to provide a safe lighting source for poor families in Gaza through the installation of solar cells in all governorates of Gaza to provide the family with a lighting system generated by 320 watts in a period Morning and 200 watts in the evening for 8 hours which became a haven for the Gazans in the midst of a complex electricity.
